"The buck stops here," declared the angry mayor.
If men were angels, no government would be needed.
No country today has an effective government. All
happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.
Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner
of traveling. A small man can be just as exhausted
as a great man. Nobody believes a rumor here in
Washington until it's officially denied.
God will forgive me; that's his business. In the
republic of mediocrity, genius is dangerous. He is
a fine friend, he stabs you in the front. A friend
that ain't in need is a friend indeed. Exit now!
A free society is one where it's safe to be hated.
A falsehood is an attempt to withhold the truth
from those who have a right to know. There is
nothing more pathetic than a forgetful liar.
Education today, more than ever before, must see
clearly the dual objectives: education for living
and educating for making a living. We won't have a
society if we destroy the environment.
Zebra stripes on zippers. Diplomat: A person who
can be disarming even though his country isn't.
Every new opinion, at its starting, is precisely
in a minority of one. Failure has gone to his head.
Forty is the old age of youth; fifty the youth of
old age. To me, old age is fifteen years older than
I am. No man will ever bring out of the Presidency
the reputation which carries him into it.
Radical: A person whose left hand does know what
his other left hand is doing. It doesn't matter if
you're rich or poor, as long as you've got money.
I've been rich and I've been poor; rich is better.
Men who use terrorism as a means to power, rule by
terror once they are in power. Is it right or
wrong? Is it true or false? Is it beautiful or
ugly? It adds spice to my conversation.
Do not take life too seriously. You will never get
out of it alive. The more things change, the more
they stay the same. Racism is the snobbery of the
poor. The family is the nucleus of civilization.
A fanatic is a man that does what he thinks the
Lord would do if he knew the facts of the case.
I love criticism just so long as it's unqualified
praise. Criticism comes easier than craftsmanship.
Creative intelligence in its various forms and
activities is what makes man. The country only
has charms for those not obliged to stay there.
Peace without justice is tyranny. Right?
Law never made men a whit more just. When a man
assumes a public trust, he should consider himself
as public property. Men will sooner surrender their
rights than their customs. Zapping the lazy zoos.
The power of accurate observation is commonly
called cynicism by those who have not got it.
I respect faith but doubt is what gets you an
education. What ought I to do?
